The past thirty or so years have offered me challenges I never dreamed of. I no longer take for granted the ability to walk. “You never know what you’ve lost till it’s gone,” became my reality at age thirty-seven.

The years since then have taken me on a healing journey that has restored substantial movement to my right arm and let, and has profoundly changed who I am. Healing has come, slower than I hoped for, but it has come on many levels.

As I approach old age (reaching 70 hit hard!) I grew increasingly concerned that any more healing was past, and that the possibility of future increase in function was gone . . . .

Learning to ask for help

Kayaking can be magical. Some of us need support. Volunteers with the Blackstone Heritage Corridor helped me in and back out of the boat. The paddling? That was up to me.

Here are some lessons I’ve learned about asking for help/support, from years of practice. The recording I made here was first shared through Michael Whitehouse’s Grateful Growth Summit. Many thanks to Michael for spurring me to meet his challenge of creating a fifteen minute talk for this event. The recording has more “what to do” suggestions than are listed here.

One of my favorite pieces of shoreline is on the southeast coast of Massachusetts. New England is well known for its rugged, rocky coast. This little spit of land, Gooseberry Island, juts out into Long Island Sound and has some sandy beaches and oversize boulders. A causeway allows visitors to drive out onto the island.

Traveling where many have gone before-Medfield State Hospital grounds

Views of the Charles River

Medfield State Hospital operated from 1892-2003 as a state mental hospital, sometimes referred to as an insane asylum. Now owned by the town of Medfield, the grounds are open to the public during daytime hours, and offer some stunning views of the Charles River. Accessed from Old Hospital Road, just off Rt. 27, north of Medfield Center, the property is surrounded by Charles River floodplain. Continue reading
