Finding Easy Walks at Powissett Farm, Dover

2020 a challenging year for most of us, and certainly more challenging for some than others. For those of us lucky enough to have kept healthy, we are keenly aware that often, remaining healthy has come at the cost of incredibly loneliness. and facing a different Thanksgiving, we wondered if we could do something different to help ease the loneliness just a little. Easy Walks lend themselves to time with older family members. It works for me too. The day promised to be overcast, and rather than plan a shortened visit, we suggested family meet us at a local trail where we could enjoy time taking an Easy Walk together.

With limited time, take a walk around the block

Mute swan at Silver Lake

My calendar for the day mostly was full (for me) and it promised to be comfortable and sunny. What to do before the sun set? Take a simple walk around the block.

Finding Easy Walks in the Berkshires, Connecticut

A walkway invites visitors to climb alongside the Kent Falls, but sunset approached, and we chose to avoid others on the trail. For this visit, a view of the falls was enough

Sometimes you simply have to get out of the house. A neighbor on our little dead end street told us the tree cutting crew would be arriving in the morning to spend the day removing five trees. Rather than be blocked in for the day, we packed up, and headed out for the Berkshires, extra clothes, chairs, lunch, and snacks packed.

Sculpture reflections on the pond at the Franklin Sculpture park

I met Steve Sherlock, of Franklin Matters at the Sculpture Park in Franklin, MA. The plan was to tape an episode of Finding Easy Walks, a new Cable TV show I began recently where viewers can join me as we go to some of my favorite local outdoor Easy Walks locations.

Return to Gooseberry Island

The outgoing tide left hardpacked sand along the shoreline of Gooseberry Island on an overcast morning

The forecast was for rain, so we used our strategy for #Avoidingcrowds and headed to the shore, confident we would be able to enjoy a walk outside without lots of fellow travelers. Gooseberry Island, in Westport, MA is still our favorite, and closest place to take in the scent of salt water.

Halloween snow storm Silver Lake neighborhood, Bellingham

Snow-covered bird feeders in our yard help provide a measure of all the snow that fell the day before

We live near Silver Lake in Bellingham, and watched with others as rain fell for two days before turning to snow, and then kept snowing the whole day. What had been forecast as 1-3 inches of snow turned out to be more like 5 inches, at least in our neighborhood. We woke to a winter wonderland Halloween morning and headed right out before the warming sun melted everything and returned us to autumn.

We visited the Hopedale Parklands on a misty morning to record a “Corridor Chat” with folks from the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor. We were talking about Finding Easy Walks Wherever You Are, and tips found in the book to help you have a safer, more positive experience spending time outdoors. Here’s the final 10 minute video: https://youtu.be/NwLnKLFJvJk

Walking through history at the Bellingham town common

Watering trough for horses now stands in a place of honor at the town common

Town commons are, well, common throughout New England, but this doesn’t mean they have remained static throughout their history. Many town commons have been altered, “improved” and in Bellingham’s case, built on and almost forgotten. But today, Bellingham has a vibrant town common that is well-situated, beloved, and much visited. Community events take place there often, and visitors, both adults and children, spend time there daily throughout the year.

Franklin/Bellingham SNETT Tunnel!

Prospect Street Tunnel in Franklin, along the SNETT is open for visitors!

Marjorie Turner Hollman is a writer who loves the outdoors. Link to all Marjorie’s books.

Prospect Street had been a huge barrier on the SNETT in Franklin for many years. When the trail was still a rail line, a bridge carried local traffic over the rail line. When the line fell into disuse, apparently it was easier (and short term was cheaper) to fill the rail line with dirt rather than repair the bridge. Since then, the SNETT has been getting developed as a rail trail, section by section,

Avoiding crowds–Blackall Preserve Cumberland, RI

Pond on the property of Blackall Family preserve

Marjorie Turner Hollman is a writer who loves the outdoors. Link to all Marjorie’s books.

We had driven past the trail kiosk for the Blackall Family Preserve in Cumberland, RI a number of times, but had no real idea if we would find any Easy Walks in this area. Many trails in Cumberland are quite rocky. This one might have been too. But “Be willing to explore,” is a strategy for finding Easy Walks I urge my readers to adopt. Following on this is, “Have a plan B.”
