For all the rain we had this spring, somehow every single scheduled date for the Adaptive Biking program in the Blackstone Valley brought, if not bright sunny skies, at least a reprieve from the near constant rain we have experienced of late. A parade of bikes sets off from the Worcester Visitor Center
Perhaps you have noticed we’ve been talking a lot about adaptive biking when you check in here. For the month of May, it’s been at the top of my “to do” list. You see, I am not only a National Park Volunteer with the Blackstone Heritage Corridor (VIP), I am also a participant in these adaptive biking events. Last year we had one opportunity to participate in an adaptive biking program in the Blackstone Valley. Thanks to the generosity of the MADCR Universal Access Program, which funded these rides, 5 different dates in May 2019 have been made available to area residents who might want to take advantage of getting out on a bike regardless of one’s capabilities. Yes, it’s been raining in Massachusetts (and in other locations in the eastern and midwest states). And yes, trails are pretty muddy in many spots.
One of the smaller puddles we encountered–others simply required bushwhacking around the trail to get by the water in the trail
Still, on an overcast afternoon, as we explored a neighborhood on the south side of Long Lake in Littleton, we came across a lovely network of trails called Long Lake Park that provide access to some wonderful views of Long Lake in Littleton. Continue reading

Pegan Hill in Natick, MA has been on my radar for some time, and as I work to wrap up the updates to More Easy Walks in Massachusetts, I had hoped to visit here to decide if it did, indeed, fit my criteria for offering visitors an Easy Walk. Life events continued to thwart my intention, but finally the day dawned bright and sunny, my best walking buddy was available, and we headed over to walk the trails and see what was there. Crossing the Stones River on the Stones River Greenway,near Cason Park, Murfreesboro
We left grandchildren and headed toward Nashville to fly back home to Massachusetts, but on our way to the airport spotted a railtrail on the map, quite near the highway off Rt. 24 in Murfreesboro. In short order we found a large parking area at the Cason entrance to the Stones River Greenway. We had little time, but it was great to get out and stretch in the sunshine before getting back on a plane to return home. Continue reading

Delaware river with mountains on either side of the river
When we got to the Delaware Water Gap, I was surprised to learn that it is so much more than a spot where the Delaware River cuts between a mountain range. In fact, for about thirty miles, on both sides of the river, the Water Gap is actually a National Recreation Area. Continue reading

Marshlands of Cape May, New Jersey
Cape May, NJ is renowned in the birding world as a hotspot for birding in the spring and fall. We had the chance to get there a wee bit early, but found plenty to see, with less crowded roads and trails while we were there. Similar in feel to Cape Cod, the landscape is coastal, with lot of sand, dunes, and houses built close together. Main Street offers scads of tiny shops to tempt tourists, and built up areas of hotels for seasonal visitors. We spotted the obligatory mini-golf spot as well. Continue reading
