Just off Rt. 7 in Sheffield, Massachusetts is a covered bridge that spans the Housatonic River. We were in the area and looking for a picnic spot. A short one-lane dirt road leads to parking for about six cars next to the river. The covered bridge is closed to vehicular traffic and is just a few steps from the parking area. Visitors must undertake a slight incline to access the bridge.
As we pulled in we spotted a bicyclist sail through the covered bridge. He quickly disappeared, taking his loud radio with him. Presumably he continued on into the wooded path beyond the bridge. Because of time constraints, (and no wish to catch up with the newscast he was sharing with passersby), we did not investigate.
Multiple benches and one picnic table next to the river make for a perfect spot to sit awhile and watch the river flow by. A huge sand pile that had washed up on the river bank offered evidence of the strength of the river when it is in flood. In fact, the Army Corps rebuilt the bridge after one of the bridge abutments was undermined by the Housatonic River
After our lunch, we headed back to the bridge to continue to our next destination. Just as I approached the entrance to the span, an odd metal post caught my eye. On closer inspection I was able to read the inscription imprinted on the circular plaque at the top of the post.

Aliens had been here! The sign assured me that the truth of the story had been affirmed by the U.S. government. The date cited was 1969, so any evidence that might have existed is long gone. Count me skeptical. Read more about it here, and decide for yourself.
Happy trails!
Marjorie
