Lady Slippers at the Blackstone Gorge

Sweet sight of late spring–Lady Slippers!

The great thing about visiting places nearby is that different seasons offer such delightful treats, if you pay attention. From walks in past years, I knew lady slippers were growing next to the Blackstone Gorge, and I had seen a very few lady slippers in other nearby places. To enjoy other views of the gorge, check out these posts:  https://marjorieturner.com/2018/04/26/history-of-the-blackstone-gorge/  https://marjorieturner.com/2017/06/07/searching-for-mountain-laurel-blackstone-gorge/  https://marjorieturner.com/2011/10/20/enjoying-the-wonders-of-the-blackstone-gorge-2/ Continue reading

Long Lake Littleton Conservation Area

On the southern shore of Long Lake, Littleton, MA, as spring is bursting forth

Yes, it’s been raining in Massachusetts (and in other locations in the eastern and midwest states). And yes, trails are pretty muddy in many spots.

One of the smaller puddles we encountered–others simply required bushwhacking around the trail to get by the water in the trail

Still, on an overcast afternoon, as we explored a neighborhood on the south side of Long Lake in Littleton, we came across a lovely network of trails called Long Lake Park that provide access to some wonderful views of Long Lake in Littleton. Continue reading

Pegan Hill, Natick, Easy Walk to Amazing Views

Pegan Hill in Natick, MA has been on my radar for some time, and as I work to wrap up the updates to More Easy Walks in Massachusetts, I had hoped to visit here to decide if it did, indeed, fit my criteria for offering visitors an Easy Walk. Life events continued to thwart my intention, but finally the day dawned bright and sunny, my best walking buddy was available, and we headed over to walk the trails and see what was there. Fun at the Franklin Sculpture park

Time with energetic grands during February vacation means trying to figure out where to head outdoors where kids will have fun and Grandma will not break her neck! The sun was shining, we’d grabbed a quick lunch, then headed right around the corner to the Sculpture Park in Franklin. Continue reading

Quiet Easy Walk on the SNETT, Blackstone, Near Farm Street

Portion of Harris Pond seen from the SNETT, Blackstone

The finished portion of the SNETT/Blackstone Greenway has received a lot of press, but a section east of there, still in Blackstone, offers some pretty views of Harris Pond that makes this section of the trail a real pleasure to visit. The trail between Farm Street and Rt. 122, as well as east of Farm Street, headed over to Bellingham, is not only high and dry, it offers water views along the trail, sometimes on both sides of the raised trail. Pretty pond to walk around at the fish hatchery–the pond is actually Bungay Brook, dammed at this spot to creatr the pond

The rain held off so Christine and I enjoyed the cooler breezes as the weather changed and headed out to the Fish Hatchery in North Attleboro, after enjoying lunch together at the Unlikely Story bookstore in nearby Plainville. Continue reading

Grant Follow up: Sharing the Joy

Book tour 10

Checking in at New Hope with Marcia Szymanski, Director

When I started working with the non-profit organization Ten Mile River Watershed Council to help them create a new Easy Walks book with me, I searched for grants to help support our efforts. A  lot of grant making entities are not interested in helping fund the creation of books. Yup, expressly so–not interested. Each organization has specific requirements. No problem. I finally turned to grants I was familiar with and reached out to the towns in MA included in the book we were working on. In the end, everything is local, as we know. Continue reading

Celebrating the New Book!

Easy_Walks_and_Paddl_Cover_for_KindleAfter all the hard work of writing a book (or in this case, writing portions and editing the whole), many might think the work is done. But no, if you want a book to be read, used, and enjoyed, people have to know it exists. And as they say, “It takes a village.” Continue reading

A gaggle of ducklings skitter about in the water at Franklin’s sculpture park

What a pleasure to introduce friends to lovely local spots around the corner from where I live. Despite having visited both spots many times in the past, surprises awaited at both locations. Continue reading
