A gorgeous fall day appeared, with blue skies, bright sunshine, the reds and oranges and bright yellows of fall on full display. I had a meeting in Wrentham, which got me right next door to one of my favorite easy walks, so after the meeting we headed up to the top of Knuckup HIll, in times past the old town ski hill. Waiting for…Foliage–it Finally Arrived!

Like many in New England, I look forward to taking in the stunning display of foliage that is an annual tradition around here. Usually happens around the first two weeks of October. But as we moved our way through this blessedly cooler month of the year (yeah!) I, and others like me, kept saying, “Hmm, not much foliage this year.” I heard other comments like, “No reds, just some yellow, so disappointing.” Continue reading

Going to Church for a “Make Your Own Storybook” Walk

group photo

Folks of all ages got outdoors for a Make Your Own storybook walk in Westwood

Christine and I have teamed up for more adventures than I can count over the years, but this was the first time we worked together to bring the “Make Your Own Storybook” Walk to the church where she now works. We planned it for foliage season, and couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day. Continue reading

Stretching our legs at Mt. Ward, Marlborough

Catherine used to live quite nearby and was a willing walking buddy as I researched trails to include in the several Easy Walks books I’ve published. But she moved closer to family, and we hadn’t had a chance to see each other. Yesterday we finally made a date to meet, have lunch together, and explore a nearby trail, Mt. Ward, Continue reading

Leaf peeping in the Berkshires

We headed out the Masspike this past weekend, hoping to avoid the leaf peepers of Vermont and New Hampshire, and indeed, the traffic was surprisingly light this past weekend. So light that we just kept going, much farther west than we originally planned. We ended up all the way in the Great Barrington area, crossed into Connecticut and got some great views. I had heard of a new section of railtrail at Coldspring Park, off Harris Avenue in Woonsocket, but last we looked, it was not obvious where the trail might be. When we stopped by today, it was easy to find the trail, and quite easy to walk alongside the river for about a half mile, all the way to the Massachusetts line. Continue reading

Fall Rains Leave Their Mark–Full Rivers, Multitudes of Mushrooms

We had an unusually wet fall already, and the local rivers were showing the effects. Most rivers we drive by are high. On a bike ride along the Blackstone River Bikeway, we came to the Pratt Dam in Cumberland, RI, Continue reading

Charles River headwaters, seen from Echo Trail, Hopkinton

Echo Lake, headwaters of the Charles River

Many of us are familiar with the Charles River, and if you have been to Boston, you probably have driven over, walked alongside, or simply understand that the Charles divides Boston and Cambridge. But the Upper Charles is another matter. Echo Lake in Hopkinton is the headwaters. But where is it? And how can you see it? One of the newest trails in Hopkinton makes getting views of Echo Lake much easier, and even has a small parking lot to accommodate visitors. Continue reading

Make Your Own Storybook Goes to Foxfire Farm

DSC07048

A beautiful setting to create a story

The overcast day offered cool temps, no wind, and a wonderful setting to host the most recent, “MakeĀ  Your Own Storybook” walk. I have begun to think of these events as more “walk-abouts” than hikes. We never know what may happen, what we might see along the way, and how the children and parents and volunteers will interact with each other. We have no particular goal in mind, and no certain destination. Continue reading
