Trees on Fire–Fall in New England

Cemeteries are wonderful places to walk. I spotted these sugar maples in a cemetery in Mendon, MA and had to stop and walk around, to attempt to capture the vibrant colors in this quiet little place. Fall in New England–Taking a walk “right around the corner”

A quiet, family-friendly spot along the Upper Charles Trail

Just one block from downtown Milford, the ‘Missing Link’ portion of the Upper Charles offers a spot to enjoy the quiet.

Perhaps it’s the same every year. But this year the leaves seem to be particularly ablaze. I’ve seen maple trees with just the tips of their branches touched with orange. Other maples appear engulfed in fire. We’ve finally gotten some much-needed rain, which didn’t stop us from venturing out on the trail. But since it was wet, a paved railtrail was a good choice this drizzly morning. Continue reading →

Hints of fall color

It’s been a long summer. I’ve become an early bird, transformed from the night owl I have been most of my life. Easy Walk at Sweet Pond Conservation area, Mansfield, MA

Old Letters Become Time Machine to the Past

One of my dad’s first letters to the woman who would be his wife for the coming 50 years

I’ve been a personal historian for a number of years, and have seen how powerful the experience of documenting and preserving one’s family stories can be. We personal historians often talk about the gift of passing on family stories to the next generation, assuring that you’re not forgotten and more. But I never realized that doing the work of preserving your family legacy—the photos that tell stories, documents, letters, and the stories themselves—can actually be a powerful time machine. Amble Through Moosehill Farm, Sharon, MA

The Trustees of the Reservation provide a wonderful place to wander through open fields, into woodlands, then along a lane through the woods that feels as though it was a cart-path from long ago. Time Machine a Reality? Only if You’re Very Lucky

I was recently invited to guest post on Family Legal Partner’s blog about ‘legacy’ and thought of a story I could share. Climb Peppercorn Hill, Upton for a great view

Not really an Easy Walk, this approach to Peppercorn Hill takes some work to get up, and back down!

We recently visited Peppercorn Hill Conservation area in Upton, MA and found the climb somewhat strenuous, but manageable, especially since I had been told there was a nice view once we arrived at the top.
