We were looking for a nearby spot to take an Easy Walk when we were in Newton, Massachusetts. A place that offered something of interest for family members needing a break was our goal. While heading in one direction, we spotted a sign for Echo Bridge and Hemlock Gorge, along the Charles River at the Needham, Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts line

This open space is a part of the Charles River Reservation. Although we were familiar with the bridge itself, we had never taken a walk starting at this entrance. We changed plans and pulled into a small parking area to see if this might be an Easy Walk.
Turns out, it was! Limited parking off Elliot Street in Newton restricts crowds, and the roar of the Charles River as it spills over the dam nearby drowns out nearby traffic noise. Despite it being a Saturday, we found a spot to park and followed a gravel path to where we found views of the bridge and the river.
Construction of the bridge began in 1876 as part of an aqueduct system bringing water from Cochituate Reservoir to Boston. For some history and photos from construction of the bridge, check this out.

The gorge and bridge have additional access options to explore. We opted to stay close to the overlook to take in the sounds of the rushing river and the sights of the bridge. Be aware that the banks of the river are quite steep in this section of the Charles. While much of the river meanders through small towns west of Boston, this specific area has a steep drop in elevation.
Next visit, I want to get underneath the bridge and listen to the echoes.
