Years ago my husband and I visited often the Acton Arboretum, just off Rt. 2 on Taylor Road. On our previous visit the parking area was rough with potholes, but a few of the paths were handicapped accessible. Some benches were available here and there.
Returning ten years later, we were amazed at the positive changes that have made this open space into a destination I would highly recommend.
It is a great place for those looking for an Easy Walk, (that is, not too many roots or rocks, relatively level with firm footing, and something of interest along the way).
The formerly rough parking lot is now a paved, accessible, well-marked space that allows for ease of access to the arboretum. A kiosk at the entrance offers a helpful map so visitors can decide for themselves where they want to go. Some areas are quite accessible, while other sections offer rougher woodland paths.

Rather than a few places to rest here and there, on this visit we found multiple benches in every area we walked. Some were located in shade, others positioned in sunny spots. Picnic tables are available for those looking for a delightful spot to enjoy time outside with others.

The trails we walked on are for the most part recently paved. The boardwalk overlooking the swamp area is now handicapped accessible with guard rails on the edges, making this a safe place to enjoy for those using wheel chairs.

Summer flowers were in full bloom for our visit. The identification plaques (with common and Latin names) posted next to many plants and trees are educational. They also are an aid to help satisfy the curiosity of many of us (like me!) who look at various plantings and wonder, “What is that?”

We discovered completely new plantings that had not been there ten years ago. The Asian path had blooming peonies, an arched bridge, and was in full sun. Here’s hoping it is not another ten years before we return. Happy trails!
Here’s an article I wrote after our previous visit.
