Back story: Nearly thirty years ago Marjorie found herself in a hospital bed after brain surgery to save her life, paralyzed on her right side. The years since then have been a healing journey as she has regained her ability to walk, with support. Little did she know those years ago that one day she would be the author of four Easy Walks walking books focused on helping others, including those with mobility issues, to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
Bio: Marjorie Turner Hollman is a personal historian who loves the outdoors, and is the author of Easy Walks in Massachusetts, 2nd edition, More Easy Walks in Massachusetts, 2nd edition, and editor of Easy Walks and Paddles in the Ten Mile River Watershed. Just out is her latest book, Finding Easy Walks Wherever You Are. She has been a freelance writer for numerous local, regional, and national publications for the past 20+ years, has helped numerous families to save their stories, and has recorded multiple veterans oral histories, now housed at the Library of Congress. She is a co-author of the recent community history, Bellingham Now and Then.

Quotes about handicapped accessibility in the outdoors? Marjorie has extensive experience walking outdoor trails throughout New England, some of which are handicapped accessible, some handicapped friendly, and others simply woodland paths. Her experience and “on the ground” testing of various trails has given her a valuable perspective that can be of help to land stewards (and others) hoping to make the outdoors more accessible.
Looking for comments on COVID-19? How to avoid overcrowded trails in this time of Covid 19? I have lots of suggestions, from personal experience. Places most people do not think to look, right around the corner from where you live? Every community has them.
How to find places to walk around the corner from where you live? Simple tools and strategies can make this task easier, but there is no universal shortcut.
How to find supportive folks to get outdoors with you? Volunteer. Conservation groups, nature centers or watershed protection organizations are a great place to start.

“Check out these books written by Marjorie Turner Hollman. Find lots of wonderful outdoors spaces that are handicapped-friendly. Great for parents, grandparents, and children too! Can’t walk very far? Distances of each trail are included, along with much more information as well to help you prepare to have a great time outdoors. I have spent some time walking with Marjorie and she does a FANTASTIC job describing the walks and hikes so you are fully prepared to enjoy your day.” Kelly Sipe, Somerset, MA, Beyond Your Limits Fitness and Recreation
Descriptions, notable features and photos of parks, ponds, river walks, farms and bikeways, each with detailed directions make it easy and intriguing to plan outings to 31 trails in ten towns southwest of Boston. Information on parking provided for all trails. Some have bathrooms, many allow dogs on leashes, and four are wheelchair (and stroller) accessible. Other activities available include biking at more than a third, and a limited number with canoeing, swimming, fishing, cross country skiing in winter and horse trails. I can hardly wait to explore some of the five Charles River walks. Highly recommended with some hidden gems. Mary Chitty, Somerville, MA
